Generally speaking, it is not really a great idea to have pots and pans in a dishwasher.  These include your cast iron, non-stick, copper and aluminum cookware.  The reason is that the detergent, heat and high water pressure will remove the required oils from the cast iron and lead to rust, it causes discoloration on aluminum and copper and loose its shine, it will chip off the enamel and can damage or remove non stick coatings.

Look for dishwasher-safe labels on the bottom or on the handles.  Your stainless steel, ceramic, glass and anodized pans will have engravings at the bottom.

Cleaning Tips

  • Avoid using steel wool or harsh materials to clean stainless steel surfaces
  • Quickly dry the pans after washing to prevent water spots
  •  For burnt pots or pans use detergent and boiling water
  • Vinegar and baking soda can be used to remove thick layers of grease
  • To prevent warping allow pan to cool before washing

Make sure to do your research and look up the cookware properties.
